This Experimental Post Office cancellation type is documented in Postal Workshop Stamp Book/Catalog of Articles Manufactured in the Postal Workshop' published by Postal Workshop, Aligarh, 1902 edition, Class E: Stamps and Seals.

The cancelling steel devices for this cds were first supplied to all Experimental Post Offices across British India in 1893 at the cost of 2 Rupees 15 Annas and 10 Paisa each.

The Experimental Post Office cds here was allotted to Bangla Circle (C of C-40 refers to Circle HQ Kolkata). The number 40 indicates to Experimental Post Office in Dorjeling Division.

The use of alphanumeric characters to denote the locations of Experimental POs was first mentioned in Post Office Circular No. 40 dt. July 16,1883 issued by Frederick Rogers Hogg, Director General of Post Offices in India but, no subsequent circulars ever described the numbers corroborating the locations of Experimental POs.

Initial alphabets used in Experimental PO Cancellations indicating circles origin,
  • A North West Province, Ilahabad
  • B Mumbai Circle, Mumbai
  • C Bangla Circle, Kolkata
  • K Sindh Circle, Karachi
  • L Pañjab Circle, Lahaur
  • MS Chennai (Madras) Circle, Chennai
  • N Central Province Circle, Nagpur/Experimental PO established for Expeditionary Forces
  • O Avadh Circle, Lakhnau
  • R Myanmar Circle, Yangon

Information gathered from Joy Daschaudhuri, of Kolkata-India of which I am so very grateful.

I have a 1 rupee SG136 of India off paper with a very fine cancellation reading
EXPERIMENTAL C 46  14 JUL  03
Can you give me any insight as to where the experimental PO was.
Many Thanks
Stephen
