Minangkabau features are still visible today in traditional architecture and the dialect of Malay spoken.%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%0A%3Cp%3EUnlike the hereditary monarchs of the other royal%26nbsp%3BMalay states%2C the ruler of Negeri Sembilan is known as%26nbsp%3B%3Cem%3EYang di-Pertuan Besar%3C%2Fem%3Einstead of%26nbsp%3BSultan. The election of the Ruler is also unique. In 1897%2C when the%26nbsp%3BFederated Malay States%26nbsp%3B(FMS) was established%2C Sungai Ujong and Jelebu were reunited to the confederation of small states and the whole%2C under the old name of the Negeri Sembilan%2C was placed under a single Resident and became a member of the FMS.%3C%2Fspan%3E%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%0A%3Cp%3EThe number of states within Negeri Sembilan has fluctuated over the years%2C the federation now consists of six states and a number of sub-states under their%26nbsp%3Bsuzerainty.
