Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is the basic international pronouncement of the inalienable and inviolable rights of all members of the human family. The Declaration was proclaimed in a resolution of the General Assembly on 10 December 1948 as the "common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations" in respect for human rights. It lists numerous rights - civil, political, economic, social and cultural - to which people everywhere are entitled.

The UN Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR) set up a Universal Declaration of Human Rights Drafting Committee. Members of this committee were Eleanor Roosevelt (United States), René Cassin (France), John Humphrey (Canada), dr. Charles Malik (Lebanon) and dr. P.C. Chang (China). This composition demonstrated that the creation of the Universal Declaration was truly an international effort.

10 December is designated as Human Rights Day. Every year many activities are organized around the world.
