Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon (4 August 1900 – 30 March 2002) was the wife of KingGeorge VI and the mother of Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon. She was Queen consort of the United Kingdom and the Dominions from her husband's accession in 1936 until his death in 1952, after which she was known as Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, to avoid confusion with her daughter. She was the last Empress of India.

Already the longest reigning UK monarch, she is also the oldest reigning monarch in the world, and 90 years is a significant landmark.  The six sheet stamps celebrate with three stamps focusing on her family life, and three honouring her official work for the country. Royal Mail has never issued a stamp featuring The Queen with her father, and this is remedied with the first stamp. An image of her with her children, the young Prince Charles and Princess Anne conveys her family life, while a stamp with the Duke of Edinburgh marks their long partnership. Three other stamps mark The Queen’s official duties: as Head of State for the opening of Parliament; as Head of the Commonwealth where she is depicted with Nelson Mandela; and on a state visit to New Zealand, to represent more than 100 state visits made worldwide by Her Majesty since her accession.

As with the issue for his father's second wedding, the stamps will be issued in a miniature sheet of 2 x 1st class and 2 x airmail rate, in this case £1.10

1st Class stamp sold for 46p

Dimensions: 115 x 89mm.   The stamps are 35 x 37mm.

The stamps feature the official engagement portraits taken by world-renowned photographer Mario Testino on 25th November. The formal image was taken in the Council Chamber of St James’s Palace, while the informal image shows the couple in the Palace’s Cornwall room.

This is the third time Prince William has appeared on a Royal Mail stamp. The Prince featured on a sheet of stamps to celebrate HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother’s 100th birthday on 4th August 2000. In 2003, The Prince became the first member of the Royal Family to have a set of stamps produced to celebrate their 21st birthday. The Prince’s wedding stamps will deliver another landmark as Prince William is the first of The Queen’s grandchildren to have their wedding commemorated on a set of stamps.
